- Lemony aroma: A unique flavour reminiscent of limes and lemons – without the bitter note found in other varieties.
- Vigorous powerhouse: The plants grow very quickly and produce hundreds of pods in late summer.
- Versatile all-rounder: Whether fresh, dried or as a sauce – the Lemon Drop enhances almost any dish.
Plant characteristics
As a typical Baccatum, Lemon Drop has a distinctive appearance:
- Growth habit: Grows very bushy, almost herbaceous and heavily branched. Due to its long, thin shoots, it often requires a trellis or supports.
- Height: Can easily reach 1.50 m to 2.00 m when grown outdoors or in large pots.
- Flowers: Beautiful and typical of the species: the white petals have striking, yellowish-green spots on the inside.
- Hardiness: It is quite resistant to pests and often copes better with cooler nights than Chinense varieties.
The fruit
The pods are so vibrant that they literally shine in the garden:
- Shape: Slender, elongated and about 5 to 7 cm long. The surface is slightly uneven and glossy.
- Colour progression: The fruits ripen from a light green to a clear, vibrant lemon yellow.
- Texture: Crisp with a thin skin, making it ideal for processing.
Flavour & Heat Level
The Lemon Drop offers a very clean and refreshing heat experience.
- Heat level: 7 (Hot). On the Scoville scale, it ranges between 30,000 and 50,000 SHU.
- Flavour: The heat sets in quickly but is accompanied by an extremely fruity citrus flavour. It tastes significantly fresher and less ‘earthy’ than red chillies.
Uses
Its unique profile makes it a favourite for summer recipes:
- Fresh fish & poultry: The citrus flavour is the perfect accompaniment to white meats and seafood.
- Yellow hot sauces: Produces beautiful yellow sauces with a fruity, spicy kick.
- Chilli powder: When dried and ground, it retains its aroma remarkably well. The yellow powder is a culinary speciality.
- Salsas: Finely diced into a mango or avocado salsa, it creates a true explosion of flavour.
