  • Mild heat: With a heat level of 3, it offers a gentle tingle that is ideal for beginners or for dishes where the natural flavour of the ingredients should take centre stage.
  • Vigorous growth: The plant is highly adaptable and delivers reliable harvests even in our climate.
  • Versatile in the kitchen: Whether fresh in a salad, stuffed on the barbecue or lightly dried – this variety is a true all-rounder.

Plant characteristics

The plant impresses with a healthy and compact appearance:

  • Growth habit: It typically grows bushy and compact, which makes it particularly sturdy.
  • Height: Usually reaches a height of 50 to 70 cm, making it ideal for growing in pots on the balcony or terrace.
  • Leaves: Dark green, dense foliage protects the fruits from excessive sunlight and ensures an attractive appearance.
  • Flowers: Produces numerous small, white flowers, which guarantee a high fruit set with good pollination.

The Fruit

The fruits of the African chilli are not only tasty but also a visual highlight:

  • Shape: Classic, elongated shape with a smooth, glossy surface. The fruits ripen evenly.
  • Colour change: As they ripen, the pods change from a deep green to a bright, appetising red.
  • Texture: Crisp flesh with a moderate wall thickness, allowing for good storage life.

Flavour & heat level

This variety is known for its balance between fruitiness and a gentle heat.

  • Heat level 3: On a scale of 1 to 10, this variety falls in the lower third (corresponding to approx. 1,000 to 2,500 Scoville units). The heat is clearly noticeable but does not leave an unpleasant burning sensation.
  • Aroma: A sweetish, almost paprika-like aroma with a subtle, smoky note, typical of many African heirloom varieties.

Uses

Thanks to its mild character, it can be incorporated into almost any dish:

  • Fresh: Ideal for salsas, salads or as a healthy snack straight from the plant.
  • Grilled/fried: Due to its moderate heat, it is wonderful as a grilled vegetable.
  • Preservation: Can be frozen very well or pickled in oil and vinegar to preserve the flavour of the harvest.
