- Sunny appearance: The glossy, yellow pods are a real eye-catcher and appear less ‘threatening’ than their red relatives.
- Zesty flavour: It is often considered the freshest and most citrusy of the jalapeño varieties.
- Robust powerhouse: Despite its exotic colour, it is just as hardy and high-yielding as the standard varieties.
Plant characteristics
The plant grows compactly and vigorously, making it ideal for growing in pots:
- Growth habit: Grows bushy, upright and very sturdy. It branches well and forms a dense crown.
- Height: Usually reaches a height of 50 to 70 cm. This makes it perfect for balconies, patios or small garden beds.
- Leaves: Dark green, oval and robust – they provide a beautiful contrast to the ripening yellow fruits.
- Special feature: This variety flowers profusely and sets fruit reliably even in changeable weather.
The fruit
The pods of the Jalapeño Yellow are perfectly shaped and of first-class quality:
- Shape: Classically cylindrical with a rounded tip, approximately 7 to 9 cm long and about 2.5 cm thick.
- Colour progression: The fruits ripen from a light green to an intense, bright yellow.
- Texture: Very thick-walled, extremely crisp and juicy. The surface is smooth and glossy, often with the slight cork-like pattern typical of jalapeños.
Flavour & heat level
The Jalapeño Yellow offers a distinct heat combined with a special freshness.
- Heat level: 5 to 6 (medium-hot). On the Scoville scale, it ranges between 5,000 and 10,000 SHU.
- Flavour: It tastes very fresh and tangy. Compared to the red jalapeño, it lacks the heavy sweetness; instead, it stands out with a slight acidity and a flavour that is almost reminiscent of yellow peppers with a kick.
Uses
Its bright colour makes it a star in creative cooking:
- Yellow salsas: Indispensable for visually striking dips and sauces.
- Jalapeño poppers: Thanks to its firm walls, it is excellent for stuffing with cheese – particularly decorative when combined with red pods.
- Pickling: The yellow rings remain crisp even in the jar and retain their vibrant colour.
- Fresh consumption: A great addition to burgers, sandwiches or summer salads.
