Plant characteristics

Aji Mango displays the typically elegant and vigorous growth of the Capsicum baccatum family:

  • Growth habit: The plant grows upright, is heavily branched and forms a widely spreading crown. Due to the heavy crop load, the branches should be supported.
  • Height: With good care, it reaches a height of 1.00 to 1.40 metres. It is suitable for both outdoor planting and large pots on the patio.
  • Flowers: White flowers with the characteristic yellowish-green spots inside, typical of this genus.
  • Yield: The Aji Mango is known for its productivity; a single plant can produce dozens of pods over the course of the summer.

The Fruit

The pods of the Aji Mango are not only delicious but also very decorative:

  • Shape: Elongated, smooth and tapering to a point at the end. The fruits grow to about 6 to 8 cm in length and hang elegantly from the branches.
  • Colour progression: Starting from a light green, the fruits ripen to a beautiful, vibrant mango orange.
  • Texture: The flesh is firm and crisp, ensuring good shelf life.

Flavour & heat level

The Aji Mango’s culinary profile is what sets it apart from other varieties.

  • Heat level: Medium-hot (approx. 30,000 to 50,000 SHU). On a scale of 1 to 10, it scores a solid 6. The heat is present but does not overpower the flavour.
  • Flavour: A very fruity, berry-like taste with distinct notes of tropical fruit. The sweetness is particularly pronounced when fully ripe.

Uses

Its fruity notes make it the ideal partner for creative recipes:

  • Fruity salsas: Perfect for mango-chilli dips, peach salsas or as an accompaniment to grilled fish and poultry.
  • Hot Sauces: Adds a natural sweetness and a bright orange colour to homemade sauces.
  • Fresh: Cut into fine strips, it enhances summer salads or bowls.
  • Drying: It dries well and can be processed into a fruity chilli powder.
