- A rare eye-catcher: The neon-orange fruits are a real highlight in any garden and on any plate.
- Fruity profile: Tends to be slightly sweeter and milder in flavour than the red variety.
- Perfect for container gardening: Grows compactly and is therefore ideal for the balcony or terrace.
Plant characteristics
The plant is robust and exhibits very harmonious growth:
- Growth habit: Grows bushy, sturdy and very compact. It forms a dense canopy of leaves that protects the fruits.
- Height: Usually reaches a height of 50 to 70 cm.
- Leaves: Dark green, oval and sturdy.
- Yield: Very productive; the plant often bears masses of pods, which can bend the branches decoratively downwards due to their weight.
The fruit
The pods have the perfect shape for versatile uses:
- Shape: Classically cylindrical with a rounded tip, about 7 to 9 cm long and approx. 2.5 cm thick.
- Colour development: The fruits ripen from a deep green to a rich, glossy orange.
- Texture: Very thick-walled, extremely crisp and juicy. The skin is smooth and shows fewer cork-like cracks than the Jalapeño M variety.
Flavour & heat level
The Jalapeño Orange is known for its balanced ratio of heat and sweetness.
- Heat level: 5 (medium-hot). On the Scoville scale, it ranges between 2,500 and 8,000 SHU.
- Flavour: Fresh and tangy. Compared to the red jalapeño, it has a more subtle paprika note and, in contrast, more fruity nuances, making it particularly attractive for fresh preparations.
Uses
Its colour adds variety to classic recipes:
- Colourful salsas: A must for visually appealing salsas and dips.
- Jalapeño poppers: Ideal for stuffing with cheddar or cream cheese thanks to its firm walls.
- Pickling: The orange rings look fantastic in a jar, especially when combined with red and green jalapeños.
- Fresh consumption: Excellent on burgers, tacos or simply as a spicy snack.
