- Caribbean Power: One of the hottest ‘standard’ Habaneros, second only to the super-hot varieties.
- Aroma Wonder: Combines extreme heat with an intense, fruity citrus note.
- High-yielding: The plant is known for its enormous productivity in warm conditions.
Plant characteristics
The Caribbean Red displays the typical, vigorous growth of a Capsicum chinense:
- Growth habit: Grows very bushy, compact and sturdy. It forms a dense canopy that protects the fruits from direct sunlight.
- Height: Reaches approx. 80 to 100 cm in a pot.
- Leaves: Large, slightly wavy and broad-oval leaves in a rich dark green.
- Growing tip: It thrives in high humidity and constant warmth; a greenhouse or a very sheltered south-facing balcony are ideal.
The Fruit
The pods are a visual delight and immediately signal their intensity:
- Shape: Typical habanero shape – lantern-like, wrinkled and about 3 to 5 cm in size.
- Colour progression: The fruits ripen from a light green to an extremely bright, almost glowing citrus red.
- Texture: Thin-walled, very crisp and juicy.
Flavour & Heat Level
The Caribbean Red is notorious for its cutting, bright heat.
- Heat level: 10 (Very hot). On the Scoville scale, it reaches a remarkable 300,000 to 450,000 SHU.
- Aroma: Very intense tropical fruitiness. You can taste distinct notes of peach, melon and citrus fruits before the intense heat sets in.
Uses
Its fruity profile makes it the star of exotic cuisine:
- Caribbean sauces: The main ingredient for authentic jerk marinades and spicy mango-habanero sauces.
- Salsas: Perfect for fresh salsas with tropical fruits such as pineapple or papaya.
- Drying: Can be dried, but develops its full flavour best when fresh or processed.
- Fermentation: Ideal for making lacto-fermented hot sauces.
