- Fascinating play of colours: A single plant often bears dozens of fruits in five different colours at the same time.
- Compact eye-catcher: Thanks to its dense, bushy growth habit, it is ideal as an ornamental plant for the windowsill or balcony box.
- Versatile: Despite its reputation as an ornamental chilli, the fruits are fully edible and pack a decent heat.
Plant characteristics
NuMex Twilight remains compact, yet is extremely striking:
- Growth habit: Grows very compactly, extremely bushy and branches profusely. The dark stems lend it additional elegance.
- Height: Usually reaches a height of just 30 to 50 cm, making it the perfect chilli for small spaces.
- Leaves: Smaller than in other varieties, dark green and very densely growing.
- Flowers: Beautiful white flowers with a purple edge, which lay the foundation for the colourful berries.
The fruit
The pods stand upright and rise proudly above the foliage:
- Shape: Small, conical and about 2 cm long. They grow vertically upwards.
- Colour progression: The pods start out a bright purple, then change colour through cream-white, yellow and orange to a final red.
- Texture: Smooth skin, firm flesh and full of small seeds.
Flavour & heat level
Don’t underestimate these little ‘lights’ – they pack a punch!
- Heat level: 7 to 8 (hot). On the Scoville scale, it ranges between 30,000 and 50,000 SHU.
- Flavour: The taste is rather neutral-hot with a slightly tart note. It lacks the sweetness of large bell peppers, but impresses with its direct, piercing heat.
Uses
Its size and colour make it a highlight for creative minds:
- Fresh garnish: Whole pods or rings add great splashes of colour to any dish.
- Drying: The small fruits dry very quickly and yield a colourful chilli powder or interesting flakes.
- Pickling: A jar of NuMex Twilight in clear vinegar looks like a jar full of colourful beads – an ideal gift.
- Edible decoration: Perfect for sprucing up boring herb pots in the kitchen.
