- Stunning design: The dark pods form a spectacular contrast to the green foliage.
- Violet sheen: Not only the fruits, but also the stems and flowers often display violet accents.
- Crisp texture: It has the typical thick flesh that makes jalapeños so popular.
Plant characteristics
The plant is compact and very aesthetically pleasing:
- Growth habit: Grows very compactly, bushy and sturdy. It is ideal for smaller pots or window boxes.
- Height: Usually reaches a height of 50 to 70 cm.
- Leaves: Dark green, with the leaf veins and stalks often displaying a dark, purple hue.
- Flowers: Unlike the white flowers of most jalapeños, this variety boasts beautiful flowers edged in purple.
The fruit
The pods are a visual highlight at every stage of ripening:
- Shape: Classic, conical jalapeño shape, approximately 5 to 8 cm long.
- Colour progression: The fruits start out a vibrant green but very quickly turn a glossy deep purple. They remain at this stage for a very long time. When fully ripe, they finally turn a dark, rich dark red.
- Texture: Thick-walled, juicy and extremely crisp.
Flavour & heat level
The Jalapeño Purple offers a milder but very refined flavour experience.
- Heat level: 4 to 5 (mild to medium-hot). On the Scoville scale, it ranges between 2,500 and 8,000 SHU. It is generally perceived as slightly milder than the classic Jalapeño M.
- Aroma: Fresh and crisp with a slightly tart note in the purple stage. As it ripens to red, it becomes significantly sweeter and more full-bodied.
Uses
Its colour makes it particularly popular in cold dishes:
- Fresh accents: The purple rings look spectacular in salads, on sandwiches or as a topping for bowls.
- Pickling: Combined with red and orange varieties, it makes for a beautiful, colourful jar of pickled chilli rings.
- Stuffing: Thanks to its sturdy shape, it is perfect for mini poppers stuffed with goat’s cheese or cream cheese.
- Salsas: Gives salsas an extraordinary visual depth.
