- Maximum flavour: Extremely fruity, floral and fragrant – a feast for the senses.
- Mild heat: Ideal for children, those new to chilli, or dishes where the aroma should take centre stage.
- Caribbean flair: The pods look like small, colourful lanterns and bring a touch of the exotic to the garden.
Plant characteristics
The plant displays the typical, attractive growth habit of Caribbean varieties:
- Growth habit: Grows very bushy and compact, often becoming wider than tall. It forms a dense canopy of leaves.
- Height: Usually reaches a height of 60 to 80 cm. It is ideal for growing in pots on the balcony or terrace.
- Leaves: Broad-oval, light to medium green leaves with the characteristic, slightly textured appearance of the Chinense species.
- Yield: This variety is known for its very high yield. The plant is often laden with fruit at various stages of ripeness.
The Fruit
The pods are decorative and feel very substantial:
- Shape: Lantern-shaped, deeply ridged and uneven. The fruits grow to about 3 to 5 cm in length.
- Colour progression: The fruits ripen from a light green through shades of orange to a bright, warm red.
- Texture: Crisp, thin-walled and very juicy.
Flavour & heat level
This is where the Tobago Seasoning really shines.
- Heat level: 0 to 2 (very mild to mild). Most fruits have barely any noticeable heat; some may exhibit a very slight, tingling heat around the seeds.
- Aroma: An explosion of tropical fruits. Notes of peach, apricot and a subtle floral sweetness make it one of the most delicious varieties around.
Uses
As it is barely spicy, it can be used generously in the kitchen:
- Eaten raw: Ideal as a snack between meals or finely diced in salads.
- Cooking: It gives rice dishes, stews and Caribbean curries that authentic habanero touch without making the dish inedible for those who don’t eat chilli.
- Salsas: The perfect base for mild fruit salsas (e.g. with mango or pineapple).
- Pickling: It retains its wonderful aroma when pickled in vinegar or oil.
