- Unique texture: The fruits have a characteristic ‘bumpy’ surface, giving them a wild, dangerous appearance.
- Andean Power: A robust variety prized for its high productivity and vibrant colours.
- Exotic aroma: It offers the typical tropical fruit notes one expects from high-quality Bolivian chillies.
Plant characteristics
The Bolivian Bumpy is a vigorous plant that is ideal for growing in pots:
- Growth habit: It grows very compactly, bushy and with many branches. This makes it ideal for balconies or smaller greenhouses.
- Height: Usually reaches a height of 60 to 80 cm. However, with optimal nutrient supply, it can grow slightly taller.
- Leaves: The leaves are broad, dark green and form a dense canopy, beneath which the numerous fruits stand out.
- Yield: The plant is a true high-yielder. Dozens of the small, fiery pods can ripen simultaneously on a single shrub.
The fruit
The appearance of the Bolivian Bumpy is the source of its name and its trademark:
- Shape: The fruits are about 3 to 5 cm long, pendulous and have an irregular, wavy to warty surface. They taper to a point or end slightly rounded.
- Colour progression: The pods ripen from a deep green to a bright, deep yellow-orange (occasionally red, depending on the selection).
- Texture: The flesh is relatively firm and crisp.
Flavour & heat level
The Bolivian Bumpy is definitely one of the hotter varieties in the garden.
- Heat level: 9 to 10 (very hot). On the Scoville scale, it ranges from 150,000 to 300,000 SHU. The heat sets in quickly and is very long-lasting.
- Aroma: Despite its extreme heat, it develops a wonderfully floral and fruity aroma with subtle notes of apricot and citrus.
Uses
Due to its intensity, it is perfect for lovers of spicy cuisine:
- Fresh salsas: Adds intense heat and a fruity depth to sauces.
- Drying: The pods are excellent for drying and can be processed into a highly aromatic, yellow-orange chilli powder.
- Hot Sauces: Ideal as a base for homemade fermented sauces or spicy dips.
