- Colourful variety: The pods go through various shades of colour, making the plant a vibrant eye-catcher.
- Typical jalapeño flavour: Despite its distinctive appearance, it retains the classic, spicy flavour and perfect texture.
- Ideal for pots: Thanks to its compact, bushy growth habit, it is ideal for growing in pots.
Plant characteristics
The plant grows vigorously and displays great vitality:
- Growth habit: Compact, well-branched and very sturdy. The plant forms a dense canopy of leaves.
- Height: Usually reaches a height of 50 to 70 cm. This makes it perfect for balconies or terraces.
- Leaves: Rich green, oval and quite robust compared to other Annuum varieties.
- Yield: Very productive; the plant continuously produces new flowers and often bears fruit at various stages of ripeness simultaneously.
The Fruit
The pods are the highlight of this variety:
- Shape: Classic, conical jalapeño shape with a rounded tip. The fruits grow to about 6 to 8 cm in length.
- Colour progression: The special feature! The pods do not simply ripen from green to red, but often display transitions through dark purple (almost black), cream or orange before reaching their final, vibrant red.
- Texture: Thick-walled, very crisp and juicy – exactly as a jalapeño should be.
Flavour & heat level
The Jalapeño Multicolor does not disappoint in terms of flavour either.
- Heat level: 5 to 6 (medium-hot). On the Scoville scale, it ranges from approx. 5,000 to 10,000 SHU. The heat is noticeable but well tolerated by most people.
- Aroma: A fresh, ‘green’ aroma in the early stages, which becomes sweeter and more full-bodied as it ripens.
Uses
Its play of colours and texture make it a real all-rounder:
- Fresh salsas: The different stages of colour provide visual highlights in dips such as pico de gallo.
- Pickling: Cut into rings, they make the ideal garnish for tacos and burgers.
- Stuffing & Grilling: Perfect for ‘Jalapeño Poppers’ (chillies stuffed with cheese), as the walls are sturdy enough to withstand the heat.
- Decoration: Even as whole pods, they make a beautiful decoration on any buffet.
