- Unique appearance: The fruits ripen to a beautiful, almost translucent creamy white to light ivory.
- Mild aroma: Perfect for connoisseurs who want to focus on the flavour – with almost no burning heat.
- Distinctive shape: Its bell-like shape makes it a real eye-catcher in the kitchen.
Plant characteristics
The plant exhibits very vigorous and characteristic growth:
- Growth habit: It typically grows very bushy and spreading, forming a multitude of shoots.
- Height: Usually reaches an impressive height of 80 to 120 cm. Due to the heavy fruit load, the branches must be supported.
- Leaves & flowers: Medium-green, rather narrow leaves and the typical Baccatum flowers with pretty yellowish spots on the white petals.
- Yield: This variety is extremely productive. A single plant can produce an impressive number of pods over the course of the season.
The Fruit
The hallmark of Aji White Fantasy is its distinctive shape and colour:
- Shape: The fruits are bell-shaped, often slightly crinkled or folded, and end in a blunt tip. They grow to about 4 to 6 cm in size.
- Colour development: They start out a very pale green and eventually ripen to an elegant creamy white. If left to ripen on the plant for a very long time, they may develop a slight yellow tinge.
- Texture: The fruit wall is thick, extremely crisp and very juicy – almost like a small pepper.
Flavour & heat level
This is where the Aji White Fantasy scores highly with its unobtrusive nature.
- Heat level: 1 to 2 (very mild). The heat is usually concentrated only in the placenta (the interior), whilst the flesh is often almost entirely mild.
- Aroma: A very fresh, tangy-sweet aroma with a subtle citrus note. It tastes significantly fruitier than a conventional sweet pepper.
Uses
Its mild heat and crisp texture make it a versatile all-rounder:
- Fresh: The ultimate snack straight from the plant or sliced into rings in a salad.
- Stuffed: Its bell shape makes it ideal for stuffing with cream cheese or other dips.
- Salsas: Adds an exquisite aroma and a distinctive appearance to light salsas or sauces.
- Pickling: Remains wonderfully crisp in the vinegar brine and retains its light colour.
