- Vibrant appearance: The neon-orange fruits are a real eye-catcher in the garden or on the balcony.
- Fruity heat: Possesses the classic Cayenne heat, combined with a subtle fruity note.
- Particularly productive: Like all Cayenne varieties, the orange variety is extremely productive and easy to grow.
Plant characteristics
The plant is robust and is ideal for growing in Central Europe:
- Growth habit: Grows upright, bushy and very compact. It forms a dense canopy of leaves, beneath which the numerous pods stand out.
- Height: Reaches a height of 60 to 80 cm, making it ideal for growing in pots on a terrace or balcony.
- Leaves: Rich green, medium-sized leaves that give the plant a vigorous and healthy appearance.
- Growing advantage: It is very adaptable and often copes better with slightly cooler summers than tropical super-hot varieties.
The Fruit
The Cayenne Orange’s pods are elegant and uniform:
- Shape: Slender, elongated and usually tapering to a point. The fruits grow to about 10 to 12 cm in length.
- Colour progression: The pods ripen from a light green to an intense, glossy orange. Unlike the red variety, they remain at this stage, offering a striking contrast.
- Texture: Crisp, thin skin, ideal for further processing.
Flavour & Heat Level
The Cayenne Orange delivers a clean, sharp heat with a twist.
- Heat level: 7 to 8 (Hot). On the Scoville scale, it ranges from 30,000 to 50,000 SHU.
- Aroma: The flavour is slightly livelier and fresher than that of the red Cayenne. It has a subtle sweetness that comes into its own particularly well in summer dishes.
Uses
Its vibrant colour brings a splash of colour to the kitchen:
- Colourful powder: When dried and ground, it produces a beautiful, orange-coloured chilli powder that looks stunning.
- Salsas & Sauces: Ideal for light-coloured sauces or salsas, to which it adds a warm colour and a good kick.
- Pickling: When pickled in vinegar, the pods retain their colour well and make a great accompaniment to snacks or barbecued dishes.
- Fresh: Perfect for seasoning Asian curries or fish dishes.
