- Spectacular play of colours: The fruits ripen through several stages, from purple to white, yellow and orange, ending in a deep red.
- Dark aesthetics: Not only the fruits, but also the foliage and stems often have a beautiful violet to almost black sheen.
- Robust & High-yielding: Despite its beauty, it is an extremely robust variety that produces masses of small, upright fruits.
Plant characteristics
The Bolivian Rainbow grows compactly and is very decorative:
- Growth habit: It grows bushy, densely branched and rather low. Thanks to its compact growth, it always retains a beautiful shape.
- Height: Usually reaches a height of 40 to 60 cm. This makes it the ideal variety for growing in pots, window boxes or even as a houseplant on a sunny windowsill.
- Leaves: With sufficient sunlight, the leaves are dark green with distinct purple variegation.
- Flowers: Beautiful purple flowers emphasise the high ornamental value of this variety.
The fruit
The small fruits stand upright on the branches like candles:
- Shape: Conical, small and about 1 to 2 cm long. Their shape is reminiscent of small drops or flames.
- Colour gradient: A single shrub often bears fruit simultaneously in violet, ivory, yellow, orange and red. This is due to the different stages of ripeness of the many berries.
- Texture: The fruits are fairly firm and contain a lot of seeds relative to their size.
Flavour & heat level
Behind the beautiful façade lies a fair amount of heat.
- Heat level: 7 to 8 (hot). On the Scoville scale, they range between 30,000 and 50,000 SHU. The heat is direct and sharp.
- Flavour: The taste is rather neutral-spicy, comparable to classic Thai chilli varieties. The heat and visual appeal are clearly the main features here.
Uses
Due to their size and colour, they are used in a variety of ways:
- Decoration: A highlight in any garden or as an edible table decoration.
- Fresh: Cut into rings, these colourful gems add a wonderful splash of colour and heat to salads or Asian dishes.
- Drying: The small fruits are excellent for drying whole and later grinding in a mill.
- Pickling: Pickled in clear vinegar, the vibrant colours are preserved for a long time, resulting in a visually appealing jar of chillies.
