The majestic medicinal plant of the archangels (Angelica archangelica)

Angelica (also known as true angelica) is one of the most striking plants in the home garden. As a man-sized solitary perennial, it attracts everyone’s attention with its huge, spherical flower umbels and pleasantly aromatic scent. It owes its name to a legend according to which an angel revealed its healing powers against the plague. Today, it is valued above all for its beneficial effect on digestion and as a striking ornamental plant.

  • Insect magnet: Angelica is a fantastic source of nectar for bees. Its sprawling umbels offer a rich supply of nectar that attracts both honeybees and numerous specialist wild bees and hoverflies.
  • Versatile uses: From the young stems as a wild vegetable to the root, which forms the basis for famous herbal bitters and stomach liqueurs, the entire plant is usable.
  • Aromatic presence: The entire plant exudes a spicy, musky scent that is also highly prized for smoking.

Cultivation & special features

Angelica requires a little patience, but rewards it with spectacular growth:

  • Growth cycle: Biennial. In the first year, it forms a sturdy rosette of leaves; in the second year, it shoots up to 2 metres (man-high), flowers and then goes to seed.
  • Location: Prefers moist, nutrient-rich soils in sunny to semi-shaded spots. Ideal for pond edges or stream banks.
  • Sowing tip: The seeds germinate slowly and irregularly. As they are also cold-germinating, direct sowing in late summer/autumn usually works best.
  • Root care: For the production of herbal bitters, the roots are usually harvested in the autumn of the first year or in early spring of the second year.
