Gentle tranquillity from the garden (Valeriana officinalis)

Valerian is an impressive perennial plant that is not only known for its calming effect, but also captivates with its stately appearance. Growing up to 1.5 metres tall and featuring delicate, white-pink umbellate flowers, it is a real asset to any garden. Whilst people often find the scent of the flowers pleasantly sweet, the smell of the roots – particularly when dried – has an almost magical effect on cats.

Certified organic seeds – sustainable and environmentally friendly.

  • Versatile medicinal plant: Traditionally, the rootstock in particular is used for calming and to treat sleep disorders. In biodynamic agriculture, the flowers are also used as a valuable plant for preparations.
  • Insect magnet: Valerian flowers are an excellent source of nectar for bees. Thanks to their rich nectar supply, they attract numerous wild bees, hoverflies and butterflies.
  • Majestic growth: From its second year onwards, valerian shoots up and adds vertical interest to natural-style plantings.

Cultivation & location

Valerian is an undemanding garden plant that particularly values moisture:

  • Location: It loves partial shade, but will also thrive in the sun provided the soil is sufficiently moist. In the wild, it is often found along streams or at the edges of woods.
  • Soil: Nutrient requirements are low, but humus-rich, moisture-retaining soil is ideal.
  • Sowing: As it is a light-dependent germinator, the seeds should be covered with only a thin layer of soil (0–0.5 cm) and pressed down firmly.
  • Growth cycle: In the first year, the plant forms a rosette of leaves; the impressive inflorescences appear from the second year onwards.

Key planting information

  • Botanical name: Valeriana officinalis
  • Lifespan: Perennial (hardy)
  • Sowing depth: 0–0.5 cm (light-dependent germination)
  • Spacing within the row: 40 cm
  • Spacing between rows: 30 cm
  • Height: Up to 150 cm
  • Heat requirement: Low (very hardy)

Ecological contribution: Bee-friendly

This plant is labelled bee-friendly. With its high supply of pollen and nectar, it supports biodiversity in the garden. The open umbels make it easy for both generalist and specialist insects to access the valuable food.

Uses in home and garden

  • Root use: The roots are usually harvested in the autumn of the second or third year.
  • Flower preparations: The pressed flowers are used to produce extracts designed, amongst other things, to support the thermal processes in compost or soil.
  • Catnip alternative: A small bag of dried valerian roots is the ultimate toy for almost any cat.
