The blue-flowering aromatic wonder (Agastache rugosa)

Korean Mint, also known as East Asian giant hyssop, is a real hidden gem for the garden. It combines the benefits of an aromatic tea plant with the aesthetic appeal of a magnificent ornamental perennial. Its upright, mostly blue-violet flower spikes rise proudly and exude an intense fragrance reminiscent of a refreshing blend of mint and aniseed.

  • Dual benefit: Whilst the leaves provide an excellent flavour for cold drinks and teas, the striking inflorescences are a real highlight in any perennial bed.
  • Insect magnet: The plant is an outstanding source of nectar for bees. It attracts butterflies, bumblebees and wild bees in droves and often flowers tirelessly until the first frost.
  • Easy to care for: Once established, Korean mint is extremely hardy and requires very little care.

Cultivation & Location

Agastache is adaptable, but prefers bright spots:

  • Location: Loves sunny to slightly semi-shaded locations.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soil; it tolerates drought quite well, but does not like waterlogging in winter.
  • Growth: It grows in clumps and usually reaches a height of 60 to 100 cm.
  • Hardiness: This perennial is hardy. In very harsh locations, light winter protection is recommended, though it often self-seeds reliably.

Key planting details

  • Botanical name: Agastache rugosa
  • Lifespan: Perennial
  • Sowing depth: 0.5 cm
  • Spacing within the row: 50 cm
  • Spacing between rows: 50 cm
  • Nutrient requirements: Low

Uses in the kitchen & floristry

  • Refreshing tea: Both fresh and dried leaves produce an aromatic infusion. The aniseed aroma gives the tea a natural sweetness.
  • Edible decoration: The individual flowers can be plucked from the spikes and scattered over salads or desserts.
  • Cut flower: The sturdy flower stems are ideal for summer bouquets and last a long time in the vase.

Ecological contribution: Bee-friendly

This plant is labelled bee-friendly. Thanks to its high nectar and pollen content, it is a valuable source of food for pollinators. As the flowering period extends into late summer, it provides food when many other plants have already finished flowering.
