Nature’s powerful bitter herb

Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is an impressive, perennial composite that should be a feature in any natural garden. With its silvery-grey, feathery foliage and subtle yellow flowers, it is not only a visual asset but also one of Europe’s most historically significant medicinal plants. It is best known as the main ingredient in the legendary absinthe, but in the garden it is particularly valued as a robust and low-maintenance plant.

Certified organic seeds – sustainable and environmentally friendly.

  • Healing power from bitter compounds: Wormwood has one of the highest levels of bitter compounds in the plant kingdom and is traditionally used to aid digestion.
  • Hardy survivor: The plant is extremely frost-hardy and can easily withstand prolonged dry spells.
  • Natural plant protection: The intense scent and active ingredients can help keep pests away from the garden bed.

Cultivation & Location

Wormwood is an undemanding plant that primarily needs space to thrive:

  • Growth habit: Herbaceous growth that can reach an impressive height of up to 150 cm.
  • Light & Soil: Prefers full sun with fairly poor, well-drained soil.
  • Special feature (light-dependent germination): As the seeds require light to germinate, they should not be covered with soil when sown.
  • Lifespan: Perennial (although often mistakenly described as annual – it sprouts vigorously from the rootstock every year).

Key planting details

  • Botanical name: Artemisia absinthium
  • Sowing depth: 0 cm (light-dependent germination!)
  • Spacing within the row: 40 cm
  • Spacing between rows: 60 cm
  • Hardiness: Very good (hardy)

Uses

Due to its intensity, wormwood should always be used sparingly:

  • Herbal tea: Dried leaves are used for digestive teas (very bitter taste!).
  • Culinary herb: In tiny quantities, it helps make fatty foods (e.g. roast goose) more digestible.
  • Garden spray: A cold-water extract of wormwood is a tried-and-tested home remedy against aphids and mites.
