The rare wild variety with a golden glow (Calendula arvensis)

The field marigold is the delicate, wild relative of the well-known garden marigold. With its small but bright golden-yellow flowers, it is a tireless, long-blooming plant that brings colour to the garden well into autumn. In Switzerland, this heat-loving species is almost extinct in the wild and is strictly protected – it must not be collected there under any circumstances. This makes it all the more valuable to preserve this rarity in your own garden.

  • Botanical rarity: By growing this wild variety, you are making an active contribution to the conservation of an endangered native plant.
  • Tireless flowering: It flowers for months on end and constantly produces new buds.
  • Medicinal and edible plant: Like its larger cousin, it can be used as a medicinal plant (for ointments or teas). The pretty flowers are also edible and make a lovely decoration for salads and desserts.

Cultivation & Location

The field marigold is a sun-loving plant and thrives in warm conditions:

  • Location: Prefers full sun and warm spots. It thrives particularly well in loose, well-drained soil.
  • Sowing: Direct sowing in spring (from April) is strongly recommended. The plant is easy to grow and germinates reliably.
  • Growth: It grows rather low and bushy, making it ideal for the front of a border or for planters.
  • Life cycle: Annual. However, as it readily self-seeds, it often returns of its own accord the following year in suitable spots.

Key planting details

  • Botanical name: Calendula arvensis
  • Lifespan: Annual
  • Sowing depth: 0.5 cm
  • Spacing within the row: 30 cm
  • Spacing between rows: 30 cm
  • Special feature: Protected in the wild (picking prohibited!)

Ecological contribution: Bee-friendly

This plant is labelled bee-friendly. At a time of dwindling biodiversity, the field marigold offers a reliable and long-lasting source of energy for pollinators. As it flowers for almost the entire season, it provides an important food source for wild bees, hoverflies and butterflies, making it a key component of a healthy ecosystem in your garden.

Uses

  • In the kitchen: The golden-yellow petals can be sprinkled fresh over dishes to add a splash of colour.
  • In the garden: Ideal for underplanting fruit trees or as a filler in herb and wildflower beds.
  • Medicinal properties: The active ingredients are similar to those of Calendula officinalis (wound healing, anti-inflammatory), although the wild variety produces slightly smaller flower heads for harvesting.
