The bee pasture for heart and soul (Leonurus cardiaca)

Motherwort, also known as lion’s tail, is an impressive member of the Lamiaceae family that captivates with both its stately growth and its high ecological value. Reaching a height of up to 1.2 metres, the plant makes a striking statement at the back of perennial beds or in herb gardens. Its whorled, pale pink flowers are not only pretty to look at, but also fill the garden with a constant hum and buzz for weeks on end.

  • Insect magnet: Motherwort is considered an excellent and long-flowering bee forage. Both honeybees and many of the over 500 native wild bee species (specialists and generalists alike) appreciate the rich supply of nectar and pollen.
  • Traditional medicinal plant: As the name suggests, the plant has been used in naturopathy for centuries to help with heart complaints and nervous restlessness.
  • Surprising culinary herb: Despite its medicinal significance, motherwort surprises with a delicate aroma that goes wonderfully with quark, cream cheese or in herb dips.

Cultivation & Location

Motherwort is a hardy perennial that requires little care, provided the basic conditions are right:

  • Location: Prefers sunny to semi-shaded spots in fairly nutrient-rich soil.
  • Soil: Good drainage is essential, as the plant absolutely cannot tolerate waterlogging.
  • Growth: The plant grows upright, square-stemmed and very sturdy. It reliably sprouts from the rootstock every year.

Key planting information

  • Botanical name: Leonurus cardiaca
  • Lifespan: Perennial (hardy)
  • Sowing depth: 0.3–0.5 cm
  • Spacing within the row: 30 cm
  • Spacing between rows: 30 cm
  • Uses: Tea herb, culinary herb, bee forage

Ecological contribution: Bee-friendly

This plant is classified as bee-friendly. In times of dwindling habitats, motherwort provides a reliable food source. As it flowers over a long period, it helps to bridge the food gaps for pollinators in midsummer.
